Slushy Fun


 We made a slushy

As part of our State of Change Unit, we made orange juice turn into an icey slushy. No freezer was needed, just a little ice and some salt.

We discussed the equipment and the method and made predictions.

QR Code Reflection

Hi there team!

Now that we've been there and done that, I would like you to think about the process, the teamwork and the learning that you experienced during the QR Activity yesterday.

QR Code - Teamwork in action

Our term focus is teamwork, so yesterday Room 9 worked in teams with Room 2 on a teamwork activity.  Each team was given an iPad. They had to move around the school and find QR Codes. Using QR Reader each team discovered the next task. Tasks varied from telling your group a little about yourself to using other apps to show their thinking around teamwork.
I was really impressed with how well the teams worked. The team in the picture worked hard on this activity to move a hula hoop around the circle without using their hands. Great work!

Mindlab

We had a fantastic time at the Mindlab this week. Our learning was vast and varied. We discovered, during our Makey Makey session, how electrical connections can activate a sound, we also tried out some programming. Stop animation was a favourite activity for many. We used our fable stories and animated our characters.  We worked on some computer programmes to achieve the animation which involved alot of new learning. I was really impressed at how quickly the class picked up all the new technological learning.

We were also lucky to see some robotics and programming, as well as play with some tablets that had Aurasma (an APP).

Most of the class stepped into a virtual world with the help of some google cardboard and a smart phone. Very clever indeed.

Today, we spent some of our maths time exploring new maths games and activities. It was great seeing many students figuring out how these new games were to be played, as well as working so well together.  Well done Room 9!

Our new topic is States of Change

We started our discussions by defining what change is and then what can cause change.  We discovered that change can be caused by temperature and by mixing ingredients / chemicals.

Our experiment taster session involved watching what would happen when we combined milk, dishwashing liquid and food colouring.

Four separate groups had varying results. Colours changed and mixed slowly.  We discovered that the colours eventually mixed to a murky grey colour but initially the colours seemed to stay separate.



















What we realised was that the dishwashing liquid was trying to attack the fat in the milk, like it does when washing dirty dishes. The food colouring allowed us to see how the milk reacted.

Collaborative Discussions about making Plurals

Today, we worked in groups to discuss the different ways we could make words into plurals.  We sorted a selection of words, paying attention to the spelling patterns.

This wasn't as easy as we had first thought.  We discovered that depending on how the words ended (in their singular form) this dictated how the plural form was spelt.  For example, singular words ending in Y could have the Y removed and ies added, BUT only if the letter before the Y is a consonant i.e. baby / babies.  When a singular word ends in Y but has a vowel before it, i.e. boy, then an S is added after the Y.

Although alot of us know how to spell these words we didn't know the rules.

Cross Country Magic

Last week, Hutt Central held its Cross Country Competition.  We had been training all term for this event and the practice really showed.  I was so impressed to see how well Room 9 competed.  There was a marked improvement in fitness levels.

Art Padlet

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Constable Julie has been visiting our classroom.  She has been teaching us about how we can keep ourselves safe.

We have learnt about being confident and strong by standing up for ourselves, as well as good and bad consequences to our actions. Today, we have been learning about how to identify dangerous situations by asking ourselves four questions.

  • Do I feel ok about it?
  • Would my family want me to do it?
  • Would I be able to get help if needed?
  • Would someone who cares about me know where I am?

We must ask ourselves these questions to know if what we are wanting to do is safe.  For example, if a school friend has asked you to play after school?

Talk with your family about these questions and the examples we discussed in class today.

Welcome Back!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on Monday.  I hope you have had a wonderful break and are excited about returning to school.

As usual, we have a busy term planned.  There will be some changes to our morning fitness, this term.  Initially we will be training for the School Cross Country, so please make sure you have good running shoes at school.

Just a little request to help our learning … if you have a pair of headphones or ear buds that you are happy to bring to school and use when you are working on a device, this would be great.  

A couple of reminders:
  • We have the first bring and buy at the end of week two.  We will have a syndicate meeting about this on Tuesday 21st.
  • Hutt Library visits will be Thursday 14th May and Tuesday 16th June.  Could you please ask your parents / caregivers if they can spare the time to join us as parent help.

Wednesday, Hangi Night!

What a great night we had.  The weather was beautiful and the food was delicious.

During the school day, Room 9 visited the Hangi.  

The first step in laying a Hangi is to
set the fire.
The hot embers and rocks are levelled so
the food can sit snugly into the hole.

Then the food is put into the ground.
The food is covered with wet cloth and
sacking. Then the soil covers the hole
so steam doesn't escapes.

Multi Coloured Mayhem Day

On the last day of term, our whole school celebrated our differences by dressing up in bright colours as well as having a fun morning exploring lots of different activities.  There were woodworking tables, gloop, bubbles, arts and crafts and much more.  

Mrs Holmes organised a demolition activity.  She had an old laptop, microwave and a couple of DVD players that no longer worked.

"Let's find out how they work," she said.  So with screwdrivers in hand, we started exploring what was inside the casings of the machines.

There were memory boards and electrical boards, fans and motors as well as cogs and bands.  We were amazed at what was under a computer keyboard key and found the DVD drawer mechanism fascinating.

We had a huge amount of fun!

Room 9's Class Parliament

Room 9 headed off to Parliament in Week 8 but before we went we had some fun…

Our topic this term has been Responsibility.  We have discovered that responsibilities change and can differ from person to person, family to family. In class, we have discussed the role that rules have in making us responsible, as well as laws.  We discovered that laws start off being bills and then go through a process of debated.  The debating process may result in the bill being re-written and debated again.  The members of parliament then vote on the bill.

We decided to form our own Parliament.

This is the New Zealand First Party 
This is the National Party


The Bill we were debating was; Every New Zealand household must plant a vegetable garden to feed all inhabitants
We discussed and decided on our Party's viewpoint.  Then we voted …


There was a clear majority!
