Our Classroom Treaty

Room 9 had just enjoyed a day off school for Waitangi Day.  The Treaty of Waitangi was on our minds, and we discussed this important document, who signed it and what was the purpose of it.

We had also recently read the picture book, The Tree Hutt Treaty.  Once we had a better understanding of what a treaty was, we decided that a classroom treaty would ensure that we could have a learning environment that every class member would enjoy being in.  We talked about all the things that were important to us like, no bullying and respecting property.  We wrote a really big list together.  Because we had so many ideas, we needed to reduce or combine our ideas.  We worked in collaborative groups to do this, and then shared our thoughts with the class.  Finally, we came up with our classroom treaty.  We have all signed it just like the Treaty of Waitangi, and are in the process of surrounding it with our decorated hands.
